His whiskers qiuvered in delight as he stalked the rabbit, tail waving like a white banner. Every step was light, perfect, something that would have made his mentor proud. It had already been an unbelievable day: he'd caught three grouse within the first hour of hunting and had chased a small rabble of EbonyClan warriors that had been a little too close to the border away. The weather was perfect for Greenleaf: not too hot but merely comfortable, with wispy clouds streaking across an endless blue sky, and a playful breeze to boot. The sun's warm rays wrapped around his body as if to embrace him, and the dry grass didn't even rustle as he moved through it. It had definitely been a beautiful day, but this rabbit would only make it better. All he had to do was pounce, and...
"Kestrelclaw! You're purring in your sleep. Honestly, you snore like a badger and then you have to talk, too?" The tom groaned as the fantasy was disrupted, unsheathing his claws as he stretched. The gorgeous vision of the hunt had been replaced by his companion, the never-ceasing darkness that all too often made him jittery and claustrophobic. "I snore?" he grumbled back. "You impersonate a twoleg monster every time your eyes shut!" "Don't talk back to your elders." "I am one!" The ancient she-cat made no response to this, only swatting his nose with her tailtip; he yawned and stood, shaking the dried pieces of moss out of his fur and clumsily maneuvering his way out of the elders' den. Dappledfur was an annoyance, true, but at least his grandfather hadn't been a witness to his afternoon nap. Once outside of the hollow, Kestrelclaw tilted his face blindly towards the sun: it was weaker than it had been in his dream, and the air still had a little bit of Leafbare's chill to it, but at least that would fade soon. It was Newleaf, after all, a time for hope and beginnings and... "Mouse droppings." The stumbling was starting to get a little embarrassing, especially when rocks just jumped into his way. He hurried to the fresh-kill pile and grabbed a sparrow, answering an apprentice's muffled snickers with, "Laugh one more time and I'll make you eat your own tail!" Blindness didn't sharpen your other senses; it merely meant you had to pay more attention to them. The snow-colored tom tore into the bird, spitting out feathers and finishing off the humble meal within seconds. Leaving the bones for the apprentice to clean up ("Respect your elders and do your job, you lazy furball!""), Kestrelclaw strolled into Fernstar's den nonchalantly, as if violating a leader's privacy was something he did on a daily basis. "Fernstaaaaar, I'm bored. Give me something interesting to do." He truly did have a shorter attention span (and far less consideration) than a kit.

Fernstar »Fernstar lay on her side, relaxing in the open space of her den, eyes closed as she dozed. She had lead the dawn patrol, and decided to catch a little sleep before doing anything else later. But of course, there was always something that required her attention. The demanding meow woke Fernstar from her nap. She opened one eye, green iris peering at the white elder curiously as he stood in her den. The she-cat yawned, turning to lay on her belly and turning to Kestrelclaw.
»"Hello to you too," she greeted with an amuesed purr. She raised her paw, running her tongue over a side before swiping it over her head, repeating this a few times before turning to the elder with a thoughtful expression. "Hmm, how about a walk?" she suggested, standing up and stretching out her front legs. "I need to get out of the den anyway, thanks for waking me by the way." »The she-cat continued to purr, the tip of her tail twitching, looking at Kestrelclaw expectantly.

Kestrelclaw tapped his claws impatiently against the stone floor as he awaited her verdict, though inwardly he cringed. Great, he'd woken up the leader. Smooth move. He ruffled his fur in response to her 'hello to you too,' comment, sitting down briefly and attempting to look disdainful and dignified. "Yeah, sure, hello. Happy?" The snow-colored tom leapt to his feet at her suggestion, nodding rapidly and already at the mouth of the den. "Sure. And you're welcome. Anything to keep the leader in a good mood." the bemused sarcasm in his voice was palpitable. "We sleep too much anyway. I'm tired of sleeping, that's all those old farts in the elder's den do." Nevermind that he had just woken up from a long, luxurious nap; Kestrelclaw was a known hypocrite. "Let's go, then. What're you waiting for? ... where to?"

Fernstar »The leader laughed at the sudden perk in the elder when she mentioned leaving the camp. It always made her feel better to please someone. She stood watching Kestrelclaw, ignoring his sarcasm easily with a dismissing wave of her tail. "Of course."
»She listened to his brief rambling, amuesed with his complaints. "At least you don't have to listen to listen to them if they are sleeping," she said cheerfully, padding out past him and into the sun-high sunshine. Fernstar paused just outside the den, giving a curious sniff of the air, flexing her claws in the soft sand that was beginning to warm under her pads.
»"We don't have to go far..perhaps to the Pond?" the wheat-tabby turned her head to look at the white tom paitently. "But of course, if you wish to go farther, we can do so, your choice."

KestrelclawKestrelclaw shook his head rapidly, hesitantly letting her lead. Not that he had much of a choice, really - she wasthe one with eyes, after all, whereas he was as sightless as the day he was born. ... only a lot less cuddlier than then. "I still have to listen to them when they sleep!" he corrected sharply. "They just can't complain in words. My grandfather has a very expressive snore. Ech, try sharing a den with your grandfather. It's awful! Every day, it's 'when are you going to get me great-grandkits,' or 'your parents didn't raise you to be a fool!' or, 'you'll never catch a she-cat with that attitude'..." the tom suddenly realized that he was ranting and finished it off with a hasty, "I can't take it anymore! But anyway..." His tail curled in embarrassment. Yeah, smooth move there, too. "No, not the Pond. It smells funny. What about... hm... Dandilion Fields?" [/blockquote]

Fernstar »The small feline continued to purr, listening to Kestrelclaw with intentive curiousity. She blinked, touching her tail to his shoulder in sympathy. "I think sharing a den with my kin would be an interesting experiance, I'm sorry to hear that, Kestrelclaw." Fernstar pondered for a moment, before suggesting, "Have you tried speaking to him? Elder or not, I'm sure he'll be considerate enough to allow you to choose a she-cat in your own time, that is if you even wish to take one."
»Fernstar laughed, shaking her head and twitching her whiskers. "I never noticed that before, I'll be sure to check next time I go for a drink." The tabby padded across the camp, enjoying the feeling of hot sand on her paws for once after moons of chilly Leaf-Bare. "Dandilion Fields it is, but I would like a little snack before we leave, if you don't mind," the leader called over her shoulder, heading over to the large rock. She examined the fresh-kill pile, grabbing a small vole and walking a few paces away before laying in sunshine, eating her meal quickly.
»The she-cat cleaned off her whiskers, before standing up and gazing at Kestrelclaw expectantly. "So, are we ready to leave, then?"

Kestrelclaw "If you think it would be an 'interesting experience,' you obviously have never done it," he muttered under his breath irritably, shaking the few fragments of moss still remaining out of his pelt. Stupid apprentices were always giving him damp moss - he'd have to be careful, or they'd start sneaking spores in. "Nah, I haven't tried speaking to him. He's so deaf he can't hear thunder, and who needs a mate when you get nagged on enough already?" When she mentioned a 'little snack,' he let out a dramatic yowl of frustration. "I'm going to beat you senseless! What is it with this Clan and procrastination?" He tossed his head back in exasperation. Kestrelclaw dug furrows in the dirt, expression semi-amused and semi-murderous, then mewed coolly, "Oh, I don't know, are you sure you don't want to take a nap first?" ... then the horrible thought that she might get annoyed and take him seriously occured, and the tom backed up quickly; his tone was almost as eager as an apprentice's, untainted by the typical sarcasm. "Yeah, let's go!"

Fernstar »Fernstar twitched her ears, purring in amuesment. "Paitence, Kestrelclaw."
»The she-cat raised her paw and cuffed the elder tom on the ear playfully, turning and heading towards the camp entrance. "Come on, you grumpy fur-ball, you're the one that wanted to leave," she called over her shoulder, smirking and twitching her whiskers. Fernstar glanced behind her and out into the large stretch of land, and could see the small outline of Mudslide pond nestled in the hills in the distance. The talls grasses were beginning to recover from the bitter Leaf-bare. It would be good to hunt with ease again; her small size made her seem weak enough, and starving herself didn't make that issue any better.
»The wheat-tabby flexed her claws idly, inviting Kestrelclaw to take the lead by stepping back from the entrance, waving her tail. She flicked her ears, shifting in her fur as a cool breeze slipped through the camp; bad thing about Leafbare was that it took away half of their camp walls, and always let in heavy drafts. She'd have to make sure the warriors got some brambles to patch that up.

Kestrelclaw With sheathed claws the snow-colored tom batted at Fernstar, but to no avail; the she-cat sounded lkie she was a few foxlengths away. Ruffling his fur haughtily, he followed the sound of her voice, inhaling a slow draught of chilly Newleaf air. At least the sun was out; the morning had started out cloudy and cool, as if invisible ice cubes floating about had kept the temperature from rising. Kestreclaw's head jerked in Fernstar's direction as he sensed her stepping away, whiskers twitching in poorly-disguised uncertaintly. He was so used to following instead of leading, used to staying close to someone familiar and letting them be his eyes while he gave them an earful of complaints. Surely he hadn't forgotten how to get to Dandelion Fields since his incarceration in the Elders' Den... that was ridiculous. Wasn't it? Nevertheless, his cautious steps were more hesitant than usual as he blindly navigated the once-familiar territory; every dried blade of tall grass felt like an enemy's bristling pelt a whisper's length away from him, but Kestrelclaw bit back the growl of helpless frustration. The tom sneezed when his steps kicked up a tiny cloud of dry dirt, ears flicking in annoyance; finally he turned his head in the vague direction of Fernstar and mewed, voice level, "Ladies first."

Fernstar »Fernstar followed closely behind Kestrelclaw, ears pricked. She watched carefully, making sure the blind tom wouldn't trip and fall on his face. He didn't seem to be fending up very well without guidance. He was clearly frustrated with this, and soon gave up. Fernstar nodded, slightly disapointed. She had hoped he could remember how to move through the territory from memory, but that didn't seem to be the case. Either way, the wheat-tabby took the lead, padding at a slow walk, enjoying the sun on her pelt. It was good to have Newleaf back again. Fernstar began to purr happily, ears flicking.
